He did not go to Q school, nor play the Nationwide (then Nike) Tour.
When he turned pro in 1996, after his third US Amateur win, he received enough sponsor's exemptions to play the Tour in the fall. He won enough money to get into the top 125 and be exempt for the next year. Then he won the 1997 Masters and the rest is history.
