How did women cope with menstruation in the old days?

This is a serious question with no double meaning or ulterior motive.

Long ago what did women use to cope with the blood flow of menstruation. Absorbent material internally or externally, or this or that or, etc??

I suppose this question would also apply today in quite underdevelped parts of the world.
