i've got the side covers, nose cone and all of the nuts, bolts and snap rings i can get to off. i've pulled the differential out, and i've got the end of the actual gearbox portion of it about an 1/8th of an inch from the rest of it. it feels like something is hanging me up though. i don't know if its a tight bearing fit keeping it all bound together or if its something else i'm missing. i'm just taking my time with it, i don't want to destroy the case or any of the gears. i'd like to clean the 36 years of sludge and neglect out of the whole thing and put new bearings, seals, and whatever gears and synchros it may need to make it a working, reliable transmission again.

and yes, i know all of the mechanics and greasemonkeys out there are going to say that i need to take it to a professional to have it serviced, but this is something i'd like to learn, since i intend on keeping this car for quite some time.

and since it'll probably help, it's a standard 4 speed with IRS.
