How do I enter the passcode on an old iPhone that has a different Sim card?

I just recently received an older iPhone, and I have the Sim card from my old phone. However, when I turn the phone on with the Sim card, it takes me to the "plug into iTunes" screen. But when I try to register the phone in iTunes, it says it can't, because a passcode is needed. I know the passcode, but there is no way to enter it. It won't let me reset the iPhone in iTunes, either. Is there anyway to open some window in the iPhone to enter the passcode to get it to work?
