How do I get a plan for a foreign, unlocked phone?

If I buy the Sony Ericsson W601i Walkman phone (which is a foreign phone and is "unlocked" and has "no US warranty") how would I be able to get a phone plan for it? And am I limited to certain phone companies...like can I use Tmobile or Verizon?
