how do I get a rust effect on wood for outdoors?

Have seen this done on a tv show a while back using paint and then hydrochloric acid or something on wooden sheet, this gives a rust effect, you see this effect on outdoor light boxes that are usually metal with tree carvings on them. Anyone know? I iknow you can get a certain product but this is a reaction between the paint and the acid, any help would be great thanks.
 
You can purchase kits with everything you need to give a rust finish to almost anything. I have a couple in my paint closet right now I plan to use on a couple chairs I have.
