I have just given my nan and grandad our old laptop so they can introduce themselves to the internet.

They dont live in a broadband area and are likely to be moving within the next 6months so i think dial up is the best option.

I have the laptop with windows 2000, internet explorer and the telephone connection cable but am unsure how to actually get them connected.

I know you used to be able to get discs in stores like PC world - from ISP's like AOL- that you loaded and they would connect you but i cant seem to find one anywhere.

Are there any companies that still offer them (i.e via post) otherwise how do i connect them?

Thanks
I forgot to say we are in the UK and they are looking for a package of approx £15 or under per month for unlimited useage.

You do not say whether you are in the UK or not but some places give out free dial up discs, i know Asda supermarket stock the A.O.L for both broadband and dial up.

Don't forget that dial up can be very expensive, especially during the day times. Check pricing carefully, it used to be about £3 + per hour between 6am and 6pm, evening and weekends are a lot cheaper.

Also it will be a lot slower and can be prone to loosing the connections

If you are willing to spend £15 a month or less you should get broadband. You nan and grandad will be permanently connected to the internet and it will work out much cheaper in the long run. Using dial up can work out very expensive.

Her You go
Tesco
Wh Smiths
Woolco
Any PC Shop
Asda
Sommerfields
Just about everywhere there all free...

There are disc,s in Tesco, i seen them this morning. They are by the checkout or if you go to the browser you want to use u can usually register on line, thats what i did when i was with wannadoo years ago. It costs about 1p a minute on dial up so be careful.

I think that some companies offer basic broadband very cheaply. I suggest you find out about these before getting dial up, it is so slow. If they can't use it now they will be able to when they move. In the meantime try the supermarkets for dial up discs or get on to someone like Wanado 's website.

Ok yes you should still be able to get the pre-paid kits for dialup which is more often than not a good way to start your grands off on their way.

IF they decide they would like to continue using the net they can always upgrade their account to a billed account which they will then receive a bill each month for.

Now if they don't want to do that and would rather just go straight onto a billed account you are going to need to get intouch with one of the local ISP's and they will help you get everything setup. (They should send you out a setup disk which will take you through setting up the internet for your grands step by step) Oh and you might be better off staying away from AOL as they are a pain in the butt.

I hope this helps you.

BTW: It might be worth doing a Google search for your local ISP's and get in touch with them over the net. May well end up saving you a lot of time and effort...

If you're on line yourself you can log on with your info on their PC(telephone number of your ISP etc.) and get them on line through BT. (search for btinternet.co) and go for "pay as you go" .Dialup is only 1p/min or less. Win2K is fine, I use it
