How do I get my heater and air conditioning vents clean in my house?

My allergies are acting up and I think it's because I've never cleaned out the vents in my house before. At the same time though, I've never had allergies this bad before either... So, because I've been a house owner for only 5 years now, I've never had this problem. That said, how do I get the vents clean so I'm sure that there are no dust mites? Is there somebody to call or if possible, can I do it myself and if so, how? Best answer gets 10 points for sure!

Danimal had good answer. Most A/C companies offer this type service, so check with a reputable company in your area.

there are company's that do vent cleaning. not knowing where you live i cant tell one to use. you can vacuum out your vents with your vacuum but you will never be able to get every thing out. also make sure you are changing your filter on a regular basis and are using a quality filter. look up vent cleaning or duct cleaning in the phone book.
