How do I get Quicktime or DivX to use codecs on my Mac?

I'm trying to play a movie on my Mac, but I was prompted that I need a separate audio decompression codec. I downloaded MediaInfo which told me that the audio type is AC-3 so I downloaded several codecs for that format, but none are working. Is there something I need to do to get Quicktime or DivX to recognize them, or should they just go out and "find" them in my system when I open the program? Any tips at all about getting this type of file to play would be very helpful :)
Other users who have downloaded the same file are having trouble playing the sound as well. Not all of them are Mac users. I'm interested in getting a legitimate answer, not getting into silly a Mac vs Pc battle.

It's the mac. You just paid $600 extra for a computer that doesn't have necessary codecs....
