How do I know if I'm ready to get a pony?

I love riding and I have a riding lesson every week and I do stable management. My mum is convinced but my dad isn't so sure and I want to know I am ready first. Please help as I don't want to get a horse until I am ready.Also what can I do to learn more about them,
