how do i make my rap vocals sound better when recording?

my vocals don't come out the way that i want them. I am using Cubase LE software and MXL 990 mic. Any kind of editing or suggestions that you have to make my voice sound better is greatly appreciated. It sound good when i rap it but when i play it back it doesn't sound the way i like. It is very clear but just not the way i like.

when recording, do it in a small, padded space. if you can't find somewhere to do this, use the corner of a room and put two mattresses around you to "deaden" the air.

Also, cover the mic up with a couple of layers of material, this is get you a rich deep sound opposed to a hard, clean sound.
