I got a hamster he's a Syrian and 6 weeks old it says in the book i got that u should try and hold him when he's young so he get used to it but i can't seem to do it he runs away or bites me.What should i do?
Reach your finger and thumb behind his hands and gently hold his rib cage to lift him, but put into the palm of your other hand as quickly as possible. You can keep your finger and tumb in place (to keep him from biting you) but get him used to being held. You could have a treat ready, so he can chew on that as he sits on your hand. Otherwise, go back to the place you got him and get them to show you.
He very well may bit and it does sting, but if you don't start handling him young you won't be able to d it when he gets older. Try scooping him up under his body and then supporting his bottom. I wouldn't hold him long because he will most likely squirm. Instead I'd hold him for about 30 seconds, but do it often. one thing that worked with my hamster was I got him hamster treats from the store. This taught him I was a friend. he got two every day and I'd give them to him when I held him, but when he bit he wouldn't get one. That only ever happened once because he loved his treats. good luck
He's still fairly young, and even though yeah it will get him used to it at younger age, which is good, he'll still be a bit timid and jumpy. Get him used to your hands, feed him treats, rub your hands in his (clean!) sawdust/bedding... so you don't smell strange, and lightly stroke him. He will probably nip, but it won't be hard, but if he does, just jerk your hand back, so he won't like it and know that you don't. Then, if you're still nervous about picking him up, hold him in a blanket or wear gloves, but, yeah, it is good to get them used to you when they're young!
My newest hamster was very shy, but once you spend time with you, it'll just click and he'll love you!!
It's safe to pick him up by the scruff of the next, just grabbing the extra skin. That's how mama hamsters do it ) Then you can place him in your hand.
