How do I remove the agitiator from the spacer thrust in my Whirlpool washer?

My washer is not agitating properly. According to the manual, it looks like the agitator or the spacer thrust is not functioning properly.
Can I remove these parts by myself, or do I need to call a repairman....I really don't want to call a repairman because of our economic situation.
