how do i split my direct tv satellite?

I have three receiver's and all active where the satellite comes in the house there are 2 cables hook ups i put a spliter on one of them and split it to both receiver's now the two I split have trouble getting signals on both boxes but if I change back to just one then its good do I need to amplify the signal some way or is there a special splitter that I need to use?
