Our puppy is now 5 months old. He is house trained and understands "NO", and "Sit". He goes many places with me although now it is getting difficult. He likes to pull me now. He is a boykin spaniel and weighs 26 lbs. We go to the pet store and he just does alot of sniffing, and we go to the dog park and he plays well with others. Where it gets tough is when I walk him to my daughters school waiting for her dismissal. He just pulls, pulls, pulls! I tell him no and pull back but I don't want to hurt his neck, he is already hurting it by pulling so hard. I want my puppy to eventually be a therapy dog, but what can I do until I have money for proper training? Do I need something other than a regular collar? Boone is smart, sweet and very eager to please.....

just jerk the leash back. not too hard to snap its neck. but just a slight tug and tell her to sit.

You never just pull and pull the leash. You need to make sure that there is no loose leash and hold the puppy next to you, making sure he does not go in front of you. If he does go in front of you , make the correction of him learning to stay next to you, stop and make him stand/sit next to you. Start to walk with him and give a little tug when he walks too far in front of you. I use this strategy when training my puppy he is a small terrier mix, he is very well trained now. When/If he does start to walk next to you reward him with a small treat. The collar shouldn't be a problem as long as its a regular collar because i think he is a little to young to have a choker collar, unless you are willing to try it. Hope this works for you!

Training: I would respectfully suggest you read a couple of books and watch some videos on raising and training dogs. Also, I recommend two TV shows, "The Dog Whisperer" with Cesar Millan on the National Geographic Channel, and "It's Me or the Dog," with Victoria Stillwell, on Animal Planet. Both programs are very instructive and often deal with the issues you raise here. Good luck!

Don't jerk your dogs neck ever, imagine what it would feel like to you.

Now, when you are walking have a short leash so that the dog's head doesn't go past your left leg. When you are walking tell the dog heel. Make the dog sit every once in a while and then when you walk again say heel.
