I have a 3 month old Golden Retriever puppy named Duke, and I need to train him to walk on a leash. Well.. I tried earlier but he kept pulling away. How can I properly leash train him? Please help!

the best way to do it would be to start at home, in the house on in your garden. first just attach the lead on his collar and let him get used to it. once he has got the hang of it pick up the leash, put dont pull and push, just let him go where he likes. then when he is used to you holding the leash start taking him on short walks, try turning him left and right (remember this is all done FIRST in the house) every time he follows your lead give him a treat. Then try and take him outside on quite streets, then gradually bring him on more "normal" roads....

just a tip: for the first few weeks you take your puppy out dont work him too much, just short walks to start with.
the next thing is: dont worry if your pups paws start to bleed, it will get better and toughen up after a while. its completly normal!

good luck....

Consistancy. Picasso, my pekingese hated to walk on a leash. I had a harness for him because I thought he would like it more. I took him on short short walks everyday. He hated it. I got him a normal collar and walked better and better each time I took him out. Practice makes perfect. Hope this helped!

You need to take Duke to an obedience class while he is still a pup. Loose leash walking is just one of several behaviors you want to encourage a dog to do while he is still young. He must also learn "sit", "stay", "down" and "stand" as well as the value of actually retrieving (catching and returning a ball or toy), dropping something when you tell him to, "leave it" (leave an item you don't want him getting into, and not to nip while he plays rough with you.

These are all behaviors that could eventually save your dog's life. I can tell you how to train all of these yourself, but you really would be better off in an obedience course. PetSmart and PetCo both offer basic obedience. Your dog needs the socialization of being around other dogs and people.

For a great book to read on training, check out "The Idiot's Guide to Positive Dog Training".

Good luck!

Edit: I forgot to mention, for right now you should buy him an Easy Walker harness. This allows you maximum control of his movements on a leash, and minimizes pulling (so it is easier to teach him to stop pulling altogether). DO NOT try to do this with a regular harness. Regular harnesses actually encourage dogs to pull. It triggers their opposition reflex, the same reflex that encourage huskies to pull a sled.

It helps to put them on a harness and if they start to tug gently pull on teh leash and make him sit. It also helps if he tugs on the leash and tehn you tug and he slows down to giv e him a treat so you might want to carry around some treats. If he continues to tug maybe use a sprayer fill it with water and spray him with it if he tugs but if he is like my dog who loves water and trys to drink it it may not work. Hope I helped.
