How do I use the widgets on my LG Prime phone?

I bought a GoPhone the other day. It's a LG Prime. I like it alright, I guess, but I'm having trouble with some of it. One of my issues is how to use the widgets that came installed on it. There are things like a clock, calendar, sticky note, music player, etc. I can't figure out how to make any of them work. I know you have to drag them out of the toolbar and onto the main screen, but what do you do from there? The music player and calendar are the ones I'm most interested in. I put them on the main screen and they still do nothing.
 
click arrow down key to view widgets, drag widget you wish to use onto the home screen. make sure you click the arrow back up so the quick menu messgaes and adressbook keys r visible and then click and use the widget..
