How do mobile chargers work?

I'm really interested in how do mobile chargers work, because the household power (230V in my country) is too big for it and it needs to be transformed into 2-3 V or something like that, without a transformer. As i know, there aren't any transformers in the rechargers, because it would be heavy and expensive then.
