I originally thought they just remembered the ip address, but yesterday i connected to the internet in my hotel room and several websites such as rhapsody still recognized my computer.
Ok but even with the cache cleared it did this. i have heard about some websites haveing special cookies that do not get deleted when you delete browsing history, could that be it? and how would you delete those?

If you're concerned about your firewall & security; and whether or not someone can access your system, go to the GRC 'Shields Up!' page for free testing and more important information about internet security, like if you have "file sharing" open to anyone on the internet; Internet Common Ports Probe; Windows Messenger spam; what YOUR BROWSER disclosing about you and your system; Specified Custom Port Probe; Port Authority Database; and much more, with simple fixes (all freeware).
A very well known & trusted site.

It is from "cookies". You've seen those message that say you need to have cookies enabled. A "cookie" is a small file that a website puts on your computer. When you visit that website again, the website looks to see if the cookie is there. If so, it can use the info in the cookie to recognize you.
