How do you burn AVI files so that a DIVX compatible dvd player can read them?

My boyfriend uses Sonic RecordNow to burn 4 or 5 AVI files to one DVD and it plays on his DIVX compatible dvd player. However, I recently tried to do the same with Nero, I put several episodes of series, in AVI format, onto a DVD using Nero 7 Essentials "Create Data DVD" option. When he tried it on his DVD player it wouldnt read the avi files. The conversion part of my nero 7 doesnt work and I dont particularly want to download another programme which converts as the point is, I would like to be able to fit several avi files onto one dvd which can play in a divx compatible dvd player. Does anyone know where the problem is in what I did? Does anyone know the correct way to use Nero to create a disc of avi files to play on a divx compatible dvd player?
