How do you capture videos off the internet?

I know how to get them off of sites like youtube, but I was wondering if there was a way to download video from the actual tv channel sites (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, Lifetime, etc.). I'm sure there must be a way to do it, but I don't know how.
Also, I have access to both a Macbook and a PC.
