How do you deal with a teacher that's spreading rumours about you?

I'm a high school student. Recently, a teacher publicly reprimanded me in front of the class for dozing off in the middle of a math lesson. He also booted me off the school scholastics team, based on his inference of my dozing off as "contempt for the teacher". I'm okay with all those, as I know that I shouldn't be dozing off in the middle of a class. I'm still trying to correct that, but my chores at home normally last until eleven or twelve at midnight, because my parents are working and my sister is still too young.

However, just the day before yesterday I found out that the teacher also had told his tuition classes various degrading remarks about me. From what I gather, he had told 4 classes of 20 students each that I was arrogant and lazy. He also said that I "[think] very high of my skills and so don't feel the need to listen in class". That's untrue. I just have my own methods of doing certain math problems. He also went on to say that he was going to tinker around with my grade marks and fail me.

Was it unfair of him to say degrading things like that behind my back? I normally can tolerate people scolding or berating me, as long as I was wrong. However, this kind of back-stabbing I REALLY hate. Should I just ignore him and let him do whatever he wants?
And no, there's no use complaining to the principal or whatever, because he is one of the more "influential" teachers in my school. Please advise me.
