How do you feel about declawing cats?

I personally think that if it is a indoor cat it's ok, because it will never need it's claws to fight. However, witha outdoor cat they need claws to protect themselves. What do you think?
 
It was painful for her and she never really forgave me, but it was a question of my furniture and sanity or keeping her so I think I did the right thing. They need their claws if outside but there really is not reason for them to be outside.
