I was thinking about getting an android phone for my next new phone. However, my family has a contract with AT&T and I know how they feel about 3rd party apps and customization and what not. Is there a way to bypass this by hacking your phone and allowing yourself access to more apps.

The Android market is open source which means you have access to many developer apps. I don't know what exactly you mean by 'third party'. There are certain, rare apps that AT&T blocks from being downloaded which allow you to change the phones inner files and what not. Those can be downloaded by 'rooting' your phone. It's basically the equivalent of jailbreaking an iPhone.

Although to be honest, unless there is a very specific app you need that isn't on the Android Market, I doubt you would need to root your phone.
