How do you get your cat to stop scratching your leather sofa?

I've had a maroon colored leather sofa for about a year and my cat has practicley ruined it.Its not on purpose but its when he jumps on it and lays on it and stuff. Hes declawed in the front and I dont think its right to declaw him in the back.Any help?
Its a cat not kitten.About 7 years old. :-)
