and that you're here to stop something really bad from happening.
 
in the movie primer (two men invent a time machine) one of the characters goes back in time and is able to see himself, the link below explains how it worked in the movie, in an effort to prove to his friend that the time machine worked he showed him his other self.

This scam has been done before, most recently by someone claiming to be John Titor ( about year 2000 on internet).
