How do you keep the internet running when laptop lid is closed?

i want the internet to keep running when my laptop lid is closed, but have no idea how to do it. I've put my laptop as do nothing but something is making the internet turn off. any help? thank you.

Would help a bit more if you stated, How are you connecting. ex. Ethernet, wireless, dial up, usb modem. And, when you say internet is turning off, are you downloading something and then when you close the lid and return later your download has failed? Or are you simply unable to browse the web after you return?
