How do you pick a doctor off a list provided by your insurance?

I'm trying to find a dentist and I called my insurance to get a list of providers in the area that accept them. Now I have no idea how to pick a dentist off this list. My mom suggested I call her dentist for a recommendation, but I feel bad calling him to ask about other dentists. How do I pick? Should I just go with the one closest to my house? Should I pick the one with the cool, Indian sounding name? I just don't know!
