pine tar is brown in color. the clear/cloudy white is actually stickum, similar to wax like for a surfboard. just put the tar on a rag, put it all over your gloves and helmet and you'll like you're in the pros, or just really sloppy

What you see on his helmet isn't just the pine tar. Pine tar is mostly clear or cloudy white, at least it is on the pine tar stick I use. What you see is dirt that gets stuck and mixed in with the pine tar. When he loads it on his bat and gloves and then adjusts his helmet, it piles up and gets dirty. Some players prefer to leave it there instead of cleaning the helmets every game.

Personally, I can't stand the look because I think it looks really bush league. A pro ball player has someone wash and press his uniform every day, clean his shoes and make him look brand new, but he prefers his helmet to look filthy? I'm not a fan of it.

I think I heard that once he rubs the pine tar on there with gloves he sets it on fire also to make it look like that- I am not liable for injuries- it is not a good idea to do so
