How do you react when someone is gossiping?

and you are there... like say, this person might tell you what she thinks of this other girl..
like say, shes rude sometimes.. she doesnt care about what people say, she thinks shes funny, but shes just immature.. shes too young... etc...etc...

are you going to be like... really?? ... tell me more..
or how do you react..

i know how i react, i just want to know what you would do..
 
When someone gossips I usually try to give the person being talked about the benefit of the doubt and say something like "maybe she was having a bad day" or I just listen and not say anything. I won't lie, there are times when I have lapses in judgment and react with a "really?" and then I later regret it because I know from personal experience that the people who are gossiped about turn out to be genuinely nice when you give them a fair chance over time and I find I enjoy their company.
 
Well if you know the person she's talking about you and you want to defend her you could just say "that hasn't been my experience with her. she musn't be like that all the time. *insert example*"

if you do know the person and you agree with them but don't want to be a gossip say "she can be a bit like that sometimes, but i'm a bit like that too."

if you don't know the person just say "i don't really know so maybe we can talk about something else she's not here to defend herself."

or if you simply don't want to talk about it at all just say "can't you say anything good about anybody" or "let's talk about something else.. she's not here to defend herself."
