My engine light went on and my readout is telling me that there's a problem with my o2 sensor. I have the 4 cylinder engine in my 2004 GTI. Where is the o2 sensor located and how can I replace it?
The O2 Sensor is located on the exhaust. Not too familiar with the VW directly, but most 4 cyl cars will have 1, since yours is a GTI it may have 2 if it is the VR6.
It's an easy replacement actually, it just screws into the ehaust somewhere in or near the downpipe from the engine. Look at your exhaust from the front back, it will be the only thing wired to the exhaust. It will probably stick out from the exhaust about 2 inches with a wire harness attached. Use an appropriately sized wrench to remove the old one, and wrench the new one in. Connect the wire harness and your done.
Check to see if you have one or two in the car before you go buy one or call your vdub dealer and talk to the parts guys to see how many are on the car. I would bet 1, but be sure. Replace both if you have two.
Easier to do when the car is a little warm. Not hot, just warm If the exhaust is cold it will be harder to remove. Dont burn yourself, wear gloves.
you o2 sensor is in the exhaust. there is usually one right before and after the catalytic converter. It just looks like a plug in the exhaust pipe with 2 wires attached. Simple to replace, just remove the wires (should be some sort of quick connect) then unscrew old o2 sensor. then replace and hook up. You will want to clear the trouble codes from your computer or just disconnect the battery to reset the system when done.
