How are they legal since they make music and software piracy possible? Links please.

Basically they are illegal. The only ones the are still around are the ones on servers outside united states, in countries that have more serious problems to solve than copy right protection.

Bit Torrent is not making piracy possible. Bit torrent is making file sharing easier. Piracy was there before bit torrent, and will be there after. Its the websites that host the torrents to illegally distributed software that are the problem. The regulations for piracy come down on them, and their websites have been shut down in the past.

Technically I can email someone a song.. does that mean email should be illegal?

Bittorrent and limewire have legitimate uses, and they would argue that people who use them for piracy are using the software in a way that it wasn't intended to be used. And therefor they are not responsible for people 'misusing' their software.
