How is the public transportation in Vancouver?

I am not from Canada, but I want to go to UBC. I want to study Architecture (Environmental Desgin), and I think that i am supposed to do model making, and I wanted to know if the public transportation is good enough, so that I don't have to worry about buying car to carry my models.
