When you see 1000 people apply for minimum wage jobs at a Walmart or Burger King, you know those days ain't over. When people's backs get pushed to the wall, they will do whatever they have to do to survive. If the only jobs out there are bustin' rocks, you will see people falling over themselves to get one of those jobs. It's either that, or sleep in a cardboard box under the highway overpass.
 
...wage, call it a DOT stimulus? Would people actually do hard work like in the WPA projects. To end a recession. Or is the day of contributing sweat equity over.
 
People used to get paid to do that. Then a politician came in and said "we need to get tougher on crime and lower government expenses that are just eating up tax payer money"

And that is how we have litter clean-up as "labor detail" or "community service" for misdemeanor law breakers.
