When I was in India, it cost me $20 a day (for 5 days) for a backpacking guide, porter, all my food/tent/water. Is it the same in Ecuador? I've heard you can do it for nickels, but how safe is it to hire a local instead of through a travel agency? Would it be cheaper to go with other people? All my friends are stuck in college, but maybe I could find some fellow hiking-lovers on travelmate.com or something...I'm completely willing to rough it, if that's a question.</blockquote>
