How real do you believe online chatting truly is?

For example facebook. Like how genuine and how real is it compared to chatting to someone in real life. Like is it a bad thing to chat a lot online. What are the negatives??
 
its fake fake fake. like i'm really laughing at everything someones saying...
 
You never get close enough to read the person to discern what is true and what is not.
 
If you know the person well online, I believe that it can be real. I mean, there are things that you cannot do when talking over the internet, but you can still have a conversation.
