How safe is Putian City, Fujian Province, China for a foreigner?

My boyfriend & I may be going there to teach english, but some Chinese people we know & some people who have been to China say that this area is unsafe & have been suggesting that we teach somewhere else instead. We already have potential jobs & an apartment, but we want to be safe.
