How to convert an xvid to mp4 keeping voice/image sincronized?

I downloaded some xvid videos and wanted to play them on my ipod, but when i converted them to mpge4 (mp4) the sound is faster than the image. What should i do? Is there a way to fix it? Does encoding.com help solving this problem?
