How to copy content from DVR to PC?

Is it possible to copy data from a DVR recorder to your pc if the drive gets full and you want to make back ups on DVD etc.? The product I'm interested in got a usb / sd card interface and it looks like an external hard drive. I want to make sure before I make the purchase. Thank you.
