Hi, I'm looking for some advice about fixing my car from people who are knowledgeable in this area (which I'm definitely not!)
I have a 1999 Kia Sportage that apparently has a hole in the gas tank. I had a family member (who used to rebuild old cars) look at it and he said that it looked like a rock or something had hit the metal skid plate underneath the gas tank and caused it to make a small hole in the plastic gas tank. I;m assuming it must not be leaking too much since my gas mileage hasn't really changed but you can definitely smell it. (And I'm figuring that's probably a bit of an explosion hazard.)
He told me to take it to a mechanic and have them patch the gas tank and repair the skid plate. But I was also told by a friend who rebuilds cars that it's not a good idea to patch the gas tank and that I should replace the gas tank and the gas filter.
So does anyone have any advice as to how to go about fixing this? Or an idea of how much the repairs should cost? Since I'm a young female and will be taking the car in alone I'd like to have at least a little info before I go to the repair shop so they don't try to screw me over like other places have tried before.
Thanks for your help!
