How to fly to Sri Lanka on a budget (cheap!) ?

I'm planning a trip to Sri Lanka by May 31 with a return to LAX by August 31. Can anyone suggest the best way to purchase the flight? I tried major websites like travelzoo and orbitz, but they come up with $1600 - $1800 after taxes and fees for a single round trip.

If any travel agents or advisors out there known how to get cheap flights to Sri Lanka (or Bangalore, India), please let me know :)
