Hi There,
I'm wondering if there is any way to get my dog to go to the bathroom (specifically: Poop) as soon as we get outside.
Perhaps I should explain my situation first. The dog is a 6-year old Lhasa Apso/Shih Tzu cross. She belongs to my girlfriend. She has been living with us in our apartment in the city for about 3 months now, as we finally found a decent building that allows dogs. However, before this, she lived at my girlfriend's parent's house, where she had a large yard to run around in.
During the day, everything is fine. We take her out for her walks and can go to the bathroom as she pleases. The way our work schedules work out, she is usually not left alone for more than 3 hours a day, which is not too bad. However, due to extenuating circumstances at my work, there are 2 days every month where she is home alone for roughly 10 hours (Noon - 10 PM). Now, we have been having some issues on these nights.
My neighbourhood is nowhere near the sketchiest place in the city, however I still feel very uncomfortable walking around there at 10 PM. Now, when we get home and take the dog out to go to the bathroom, she thinks it's time for a walk, and won't actually do anything unless she is taken for one, usually meaning we walk up and down the street for a while. We have peeing down pact. She knows that if we reach the end of the street and then turn around, that it is time for her to go pee. She will still not poop however. Last night we were outside for roughly 40 minutes trying to get her to go to the bathroom. If we don't wait this time outside in the cold and dark, she will just poop on the floor during the night.
Is there anyway for me to train her to realize that Nighttime is not walk time, but that she is just outside to use the facilities and that is it?
