How to know when blackberry curve 8520 is fully charged?

I just got my blackberry n it's on charge.
I'm just wondering how will i know when it's finished.
Also when I first plugged my charger in the phone it turned on itself & went to the setup menu.
I've heard ur not supposed to turn on ur phone or use it before it's fully charged because it could ruin ur battery life.
I turned it off now & it's charging turned off.
Does anybody know if that will affect the battery life at all?

it wont effect the battery life and it doesnt even if you charge it for like 20 mins, people in stores charge these phones for like 48 hours put them in the box turned off and when people look at them they turn them on to show them! the charging life does not matter. now to know when its finished charging the light that is i think its red or green will turn the opposite color (red or green) like if its red when u charge it when its done the little light will be green and vice versa
