how to make a variable speed motor from 20-20,000 rpm - small, handheld?

is there a good engineering site online to shop around for components?
I suppose the motor would just have to be in the 20,000 range (it doesn't have to be exactly specific) and be able to attach a digital variable speed dial type thing

would Radio Shack have stuff like this?
an amateur project...
