How to talk to my shy boyfriend about sex?

My boyfriend and I have been dating for a while now, but we have never talked about sex. I know he is a virgin, but I want to be able to talk about it, not do it, just discuss the topic. how do i bring it up to him, when he is clearly avoiding it?
