How to upload video from digital cam to you tube?

So I'm trying to upload a few videos from my digital cam to youtube. Their already saved to the computer, but their saved in AVI files & DV files. How can I change them to movie files or files that youtube will accept?? Is there a site where you convert them over?? Or anything FREE you can download so I could get them on youtube??
