how to use an iPhone on gophone?

I currently use a pay as you go gophone from at&t. However i really want to upgrade to an iPhone 4 this Christmas. How do I go about doing this? I have read many different articles and i'm not sure which way is the right way. Some say to get an unlocked iPhone from craigslist or ebay and some people say to just put my current sim into any iPhone whether or not it's unlocked. Please let me know how i go about this!
