How to write an introduction letter?

I'm going to be living with a host family for a month in Japan and I want to write a letter to them. I want to tell them more about myself and to thank them for letting my stay in their house for the month, but I'm not sure on how to write this letter to them.... I not very good at writing letters and when I do I come off kind of snobbish! =/

So do you have any tips on how I should write this letter?!?
