How was Death able to hold Christ for three days?

I mean, if death couldn't hold Christ, because Christ was all perfect and whatnot, then how was he dead for three days? Shouldn't Christ have INSTANTLY been resurrected? Doesn't it imply that Death COULD, in fact, hold Christ, just not very long? I just don't understand the rules for this stuff.
