How was Peter Parker bitten, and what was wrong with the spider?

My friend and I are having an argument....I think that peter was bitten by a radioactive spider i an ally or in his room, she thinks that he was in a science lab at school working on a project. I looked everywhere ...even MARVEL.comI need some help!
